Dartmoor National Park is the largest area of open country in the south of England, covering 368 square miles (954 sq km), in the county of Devon. It is a dramatic landscape of striking exposed granite tors contrasting with steep wooded river valleys and heather covered moorland. The native Dartmoor Pony, the symbol of the area, is frequently seen grazing on the common land. There are ancient villages and hamlets as well as towns such as Tavistock, hubs for tourist activities and centres for the local produce industries. The Park has miles of tracks for exploring by foot, bike and horseback.
