The Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of 519 square miles (1340 sq km) in southern Wales, boasts the highest mountains in southern Britain, the Brecon Beacons themselves, as well as the three ranges surrounding them. Characterised by grassy moorlands, escarpments and weathered Old Red Sandstone peaks, the Beacons differ from their more rocky northerly neighbour Snowdonia. As well as scaling the peaks, there are plenty of walking trails and also waterfalls, caves and monuments to discover. The towns have their own special characters, Hay on Wye with its globally renowned book festival.
