The Yorkshire Dales are a series of steep valleys, characterized by the dry stone walls that divide the thousands of acres of meadows and fields, and the stunning limestone crags, pavements and heather moorland. The Yorkshire Dales are famous for the Three Peaks mountains of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, popular targets for hikers and fell runners, and also for the many festivals, shows and events that celebrate community and farming life in the area. The famous Settle to Carlisle railway traverses the area. It has also become a prominent cycling destination.
