At 3.25 miles long, Standedge, on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, is Britain's longest and highest canal tunnel. Three railway tunnels run parallel. Opened in April 1811, Standedge Tunnel was built to transport cargoes such as wool and coal. Before diesel power horses were used, so boats were legged through the tunnel by boatmen. Closed in 1943 the canal tunnel was reopened in 2001 for visitors.
