The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a narrow gauge tourist railway in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It travels for 4.7 miles (7.6 km) from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon, 3,493 feet (1,065 m) the highest peak in Wales. The steepest gradient is 1 in 5.5, in a number of places. The railway rises a total of 3,140 feet (960 m). It is the only public rack and pinion railway in the UK and has been operating for more than 100 years in some of the harshest weather conditions in Britain. Single carriage trains are pushed up the mountain by either steam or diesel locomotives.
