The British Open is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf and is the only major outside the United States. It is a 72-hole stroke play tournament contested over four days and the world's leading professionals make up the field along with the top amateurs and players who are successful in qualifying events. There is a cut after 36 holes after which only the leading 70 players play in the final 36 holes. The venue varies from year to year though they are always links courses and has been played in Scotland, England, and one course in Northern Ireland.
