With no major race track in Britain at the end of Second World War a surplus airfield and farm located outside the village of Silverstone was selected to bring back international motor racing to Britain. The site was converted into a race track for the first RAC International Grand Prix in 1948, with hay bales and ropes protecting the piggery and the crops in the middle of the circuit. These days the standard of facilities has improved and Silverstone is the best attended three day sporting event on the British calendar and crowds of over 350,000 visit the venue over the weekend.
