Considered as the landmark for North East England The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Sir Antony Gormley, located near Gateshead in Tyne and Wear. Completed in 1998, it is a 200 tonne steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres tall, with slightly angled wings measuring 54 metres across which in the words of Gormley create 'a sense of embrace'.
