Caerphilly Castle is a medieval fortification in South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan. The second largest castle in Britain, Caerphilly Castle is undoubtedly one of the mightiest fortresses in Wales and one of the grandest Medieval buildings in Western Europe. This formidable castle, surrounded by two huge lakes, is an early example of the concentric castle design so influential on the construction of fortresses in Wales. Several episodes of Doctor Who were filmed at Caerphilly Castle.
