Caernarfon Castle is a medieval fortress in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. The original motte-and-bailey castle was replaced with stone by Edward I in 1283. As the town and castle was the administrative centre of north Wales the fortifications were built on an immense scale. Caernarfon's appearance differs from other Edwardian castles through the use of banded coloured stone in the walls and in its polygonal, rather than round, towers. The curtain wall, towers and foundations are now all that remains. Caernarfon Castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969.
