The original Framlingham Castle in Suffolk was an early motte-and-bailey or ringwork Norman castle built in the early 12th century. When this was destroyed by Henry II of England its replacement, which was unusual for the time, had no central keep, but instead used a curtain wall with thirteen mural towers to defend the centre of the castle. Framlingham has had many uses over the years including as a luxurious family home, a college, a poor house, a county court and as a defence against potential invasion during the Second World War.
