Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of the city from its position on the Castle Rock and is the recognisable symbol of Edinburgh and of Scotland. Humans have occupied the rock since at least the Iron Age and there has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the 12th century. After the Union of the Crowns in 1603 it was principally used as military barracks. Enduring 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, it can claim to be 'the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world'. The castle houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland.
