The Haxey Hood takes place in the village of Haxey in North Lincolnshire on 6 January. It originates from the 14th century when Lady de Mowbray was out riding nearby and her silk riding hood was blown away by the wind. 13 farm workers chased the hood down. In recognition of this act of chivalry she donated 13 acres (53,000 m2) of land on condition that the chase for the hood would be re-enacted each year. The 13 characters from the original story dress up for the occasion. There are no official teams, but everyone involved tries to push the Hood, a leather tube, towards their favourite pub.
