William Penhaligon, the founder, was a flamboyant and creative Englishman whose first scent in 1875, Hammam Bouquet, was inspired by the steam and sulphurous aromas of a Turkish baths. There are now a portfolio of 38 distinctive fragrances, all still made in England. The characteristic stoppered clear glass fragrance bottle is still used. The stylish Covent Garden shop is the most atmospheric with wooden floors and old cabinets with rows of soaps, lotions and candles. There is an in-store fragrance profiling service for customers to identify their own signature scent.
