The Crucible Theatre in the centre of Sheffield was built in 1971. As well as theatrical performances it hosts the prestigious snooker World Championship and other sporting events. The versatile stage can be adapted to dance and musical performance, as well as classical and modern theatre. An intimate atmosphere is created with the audience who sit only 20 metres at most from the performer, so the capacity is only 980 people. The Crucible's shows are designed and rehearsed in-house and normally overseen by the Sheffield Theatres Group. It reopened in 2010 after a major refurbishishment.
