Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter. Once observed as a Christian holiday when people would visit their 'mother' church, it has since become an occasion for honouring mothers in general. Mothers are given cards and maybe flowers and presents or other treats and surprises. It is often called Mother's Day, although that is an event originating in the United States and quite different from the original Mothering Sunday.
