Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated on the day following Christmas Day. The origin may be from when servants and tradesmen would traditionally receive gifts or food known as a 'Christmas box' from their masters, employers or customers. Boxing Day often heralds the start of major retail sales and it is also a significant day in the calendar for many sporting events including football, cricket and rugby league. There are also a number of eccentric events taking place on this day including the tradition of going for a Boxing Day swim in the sea. N.B. The sea is extremely cold at this time of year!
