An open air museum for the North East located in County Durham. Built as a nostalgic homage to the industrial heritage of the region, it celebrates the everyday life of communities founded on the diminished industries of coal mining, ship building and iron and steel manufacturing. Much of the 300 acre museum estate illustrates life in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras with a mix of original and replica buildings, working vehicles and equipment, livestock and costumed interpreters. The museum has been influential on other 'living museums'.
