Maiden Castle in Dorset is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe at 47 acres. Its huge multiple ramparts, mostly constructions of timber faced banks and ditches, were built in the 1st century BC, and would have protected a community of hundreds of residents. At 6 metres in height, the earthworks are still visible today. Excavations have revealed a Neolithic enclosure from about 3500 BC, a Roman temple built in the 4th century AD and evidence of a late Iron Age cemetery.
