Neolithic henge monument Avebury in Wiltshire, contains the largest stone circle in Europe. Being a World Heritage Site it is both a tourist attraction and a place of importance to modern day Pagan worshippers. The monument is a large henge, a bank and a ditch, with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles in the centre. Its original purpose is thought to be ceremonial and was a part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby. Over the years, many of the standing stones were destroyed, but much of the monument has been reconstructed.
