Founded as a monastery in 1128, the Palace of Holyroodhouse situated at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh is The Queen's official residence in Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots lived here as have successive kings and queens. The palace as it stands today was built between 1671-1678 in a quadrangle layout. It has been selected as one of Britains best buildings. Today the Palace is used for for State ceremonies and official entertaining such as the Queen's Holyrood week. The rooms open to the public include the 17th-century former King's apartments, Great Gallery and 16th century apartments.
