Holker Hall is a country house near Cartmel, Cumbria. The house stands in an estate of about 80 hectares surrounded by formal gardens, parkland and woodland. The earliest records date back to the beginning of the 16th century and it has always stayed in the family line. The west wing, destroyed by fire and rebuilt in red sandstone, is unmistakably Victorian and the craftsmanship in many of the rooms is outstanding. Furniture includes items by Chippendale and Hepplewhite. The grand staircase was hand carved by estate workers. Holker has been described as 'the best loved house in England'.
