Highclere Castle in Hampshire is a country house in the Jacobethan style, with a park designed by Capability Brown. The castle stands on the site of the 8th century medieval palace of the Bishops of Winchester. The 5,000-acre estate is the county seat of the Earl of Carnarvon who lives there part time. Highclere Castle has made numerous TV and movie appearances, most recently in the period drama Downton Abbey for which It is the main setting. The castle's great hall and several bedrooms are used for filming. Visits to the castle and gardens are hugely popular and sell out in advance.
