Harewood House was built in the 18th century by Edwin Lascelles whose fortune from the plantations enabled him to engage the best craftsmen and designers such as Capability Brown. It is still owned by the Lascelles family, the Earl and Countess of Harewood. The house and gardens, including the renowned Bird Garden and art collections, are open to the public to visit throughout most of the year.
